Castles at Valle Camonica
Medieval times have left important monuments and urban settlements at the Camonica valley. Very characteristical are the villages of Bienno and Lovere, who have been admitted into the "Club of Italy's most beautiful villages" and therefore opened their castles to public.
The castle of Breno is not only an impressive building but as well a historic monument.
Today's visible shape is the architectonical result of a mixture of buildings of various centuries for various scopes. At times of Barbarossa (1100-1200) the structure started as an accumulation of palasts and towers and at times of the Venecian Republic (1400-1500) was redesigned as a military fortification.
The castle of Cimbergo was enthroned on a outstanding rock in the neighborhood of the urban center. Formerly constructed as pentagram, today only the main hall remains with vault and arches, some windows and part of the merlons made of stone and bricks. Probably this castle was the fortification of a feudal fief during the conflict between Guelfs and Ghibellinians.
The ancient castle of Federici was changed into a mansion house and today looks like a palace. The structure was built on top of a rock at the border between Valle Camonica and Val di Scave in the village of Gorzone (Darfo Boario Terme). The castle is surrounded by a beautiful park. The facade is decorated with ashlar doors (14th and 17th century) and the remains of an ancient tower while inside there are two inner courts with wells and some differently decorated rooms to be visited of which the entrance hall is most remarkable.
